I'm like to call these early readers "bridge books" because they bridge the gap between reading picture books and reading chapter books aloud to your children. The "bridge books" I've listed below are heavily illustrated, have short chapters and fast-moving plots. I'd suggest trying these for ages 4-8.
Try these if...
- Your child is ready to listen to something longer than a picture book, but isn't as keen on picture-less chapter books.
- You need something fun and engaging to break up longer or more challenging books for a reluctant reader.
PENNY & HER SONG
When Penny comes home from school, she is ready to sing her song. But the babies are sleeping, and Mama and Papa are worried that Penny will wake them up. Oh, but it is a good song, a really wonderful song . . . and Penny wants more than anything to sing it. Will it ever be the right time to sing it?
