We've been fans of @grandpabecksgames for years. One of the first games we played was Cover Your Assets and literally played it almost exclusively for an entire year, our boys enjoyed it so much! ☺️

I am very excited about the read alouds we have planned for this school year! 💞

✨ True stories:

I like to include several biographies for our morning reading time.

• Then Sings My Soul is used for our hymn study.

• We will be reading through Hero Tales which includes several short missionary stories.

• And we will be reading biographies on Corrie ten Boom and Harriet Tubman.

I have several others in hand, but these are our first priority!

✨ Nature's Study:

• Among the Farmyard People and Pagoo

✨ Read Alouds Just for Fun:

• This photo only includes a sampling of our list of fun books we would like to get to, but the ones shown are definitely at the top of the list. ☺️

I always have a stack available and the boys get to vote on which we read next. Since there is two of them, I get to be the tie breaker. 😉

✨ History:

We are going to be studying Modern American history from the Gold Rush - present day. I am extremely excited about the read alouds I have planned for us (although I will be the first to say that I got a little ambitious with my book stack). The books pictured aren't even close to all of them. 🫣😂

I decided it's better to have a larger list of books that I hope to get to than be scrambling for more.

I made each of us picture print out list of all of our read alouds so we can rate them as we read.

✨ Picture Books:

As always, we will also be adding in picture books along the way to go along with our history studies and just for fun.

☀️ Sooo...we did something crazy!

My goal has been that beginning in July we would dive into our 50 state study!

When I saw this idea to send letters to the state tourism departments asking for information we can use in our state notebooks, I thought it was the perfect thing to help bring our studies alive. 🤗

We've already received 23 packages from all over the U.S. full of brochures, maps, and more! We are all so excited to begin! I'm going to need to track down addresses for Indiana and Alaska because those letters were returned. 😆

🇺🇸 The Read Through the U.S. unit study is created by me and available on my website. It includes recipes, craft ideas, fun facts, and book lists for each state.

🙌🏽 Thanks to @theroseschoolroom for the letter inspiration.

☀️ Homeschool summer plans ⤵️

While we definitely enjoy a break and slower pace during the summer, I always think it is good for us to have a few things that help bring some cohesiveness to our days.

I tried to be super intentional about not planning too much and it won't all happen every day, but it will hopefully give us some purpose, especially when the humidity hits. 🫠

Nature Study:

✨ Seasons Afield from @beautifulfeetbooks
- I am looking forward to a beautiful stack of books and watercolor activities that help us enjoy time in nature.

Bible Study:

✨ Foundations of the Bible Volume One from @drivenbygrace - I have been wanting to do some deep dives into Scripture with my boys and I am so excited to use this study. It includes daily Bible readings, picture book suggestions, and more.

Geography:

✨ Read Through the USA by me ☺️ and 50 states journals from @schoolnest - We were supposed to begin our state study this year and it fell a bit short so I thought it would be fun to pick it up this summer.

✨ We will also be using the new 50 states art unit from @art_makes_me_smart

✨ And of course lots of fun read alouds - I always let the boys help me choose these and it's our favorite.

✨ I also created a book basket of options for my oldest's independent reading time and a few I will co-read with my new reader.

We really didn't have many misses - although I personally didn't enjoy The Adventures of the South Pole Pig, but my boys thought it was great. 😆

We studied early America for our history this year and read many great picture books, but our read alouds were definitely the highlight.

I have had a reluctant reader and it can be hard to know which books to choose that they will hopefully enjoy! 🤞🏽

👉🏽 One tip I have heard and experienced over and over is to read the first book in a series with them. They get to know the characters and writing style and can enjoy the rest of the series themselves.
